It is a great time for students to practice their visualizing skills, comprehension and even be exposed to new vocabulary. When teachers read out loud they typically select texts that might be a little bit more complex than books the children are reading independently. It is a wonderful opportunity to explore the text, model fluency, ask questions, problem solve with characters and share a beloved story with people you care about.
Our tutors recommend taking a little bit of time this crazy holiday season to dim the lights, curl up with a blanket, light the fire and share a story together. Take turns reading, or be the full time reader, and let the others just relax and enjoy. Shared experiences like these tend to spread into other facets of your day. Watch as dinner conversations become more engaging as you make predictions about what might happen next- or share how you related to one of the characters in the story. Wishtree by Katherine Applegate is a must read!
