Study Skills for the Back to School Season | JAM Teaching and Consulting

As the new school year is approaching, it’s essential to prepare your child for the academic challenges that come with it. One of the most significant factors contributing to success in school is study skills. Students can better retain information and improve their grades when they know how to study effectively and efficiently. As parents and educators, there’s a lot we can do to help our students excel.

Time Management

One of the most critical aspects of successful studying is time management. This is where parents can be beneficial. Encourage your child to set aside time for homework and studying, and help them establish a structured schedule. One great tool for this is a planner or calendar, where the child can write down assignments and deadlines.

Avoid Multitasking

While multitasking may seem like an effective way to get more done in less time, it can be detrimental to studying. Students who try to accomplish too many tasks at a time can become overwhelmed and lose focus. Tackling one assignment or test at a time will help them better retain information and improve their overall academic performance.

Practice Active Learning

Active learning is a teaching method that encourages students to engage with the material they’re learning to help retain information better.. This can include strategies like taking notes, asking questions, summarizing information, and creating visual aids.

Practice Self-Care

Studying isn’t the only factor contributing to academic success. Self-care is just as important. Encourage your child to prioritize their physical and emotional health. When students care for themselves, they can better focus on their studies and succeed academically.

Seek Help When Needed

Finally, remember that it’s okay to seek help when needed. Sometimes students may struggle with certain subjects or assignments. Encourage your child to reach out to teachers or tutors for support. This can be particularly helpful for subjects like math or science, where concepts can be particularly challenging. By seeking help early, students can avoid falling behind and improve their academic performance.

Parents and educators can help set students up for academic success by focusing on these study skills. With these tools in hand, your child will be better prepared for the challenges of the new school year.
